Plaque and tartar are the main causes of gum disease and tooth decay. Regular teeth brushing and cleaning between your teeth will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent the build up of plaque and deposits. At Freedom Dental we recommend visiting our practice for regular check-ups to assess your oral health.
Our oral hygiene programme offers more than just a clean and polish for your teeth. We will remove any plaque and check your gums thoroughly and instruct you on how best to keep your teeth, gums and mouth in good health. Our hygienists will also provide dietary advice to help reduce the development of dental decay such as limiting sugary drinks and foods.
NHS hygiene services
To remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) that can build up on your teeth, we may suggest that you have your teeth scaled and polished. This is a "professional clean" carried out at Freedom Dental by our dental hygienist.
Our hygienist will scrape away plaque and tartar from your teeth using special instruments, then polish your teeth to remove marks or stains. If a lot of plaque or tartar has built up, you may need to have more than one scale and polish.
The price of a scale and polish can vary depending on what needs to be carried out, so please ask our hygienist how much it will cost beforehand. NHS dental treatment costs £18.00 for basic treatment (band 1) and £51.30 for more advanced treatment (band 2).
Regular oral hygiene check-ups
A check-up allows us to see if you have any dental problems and helps you keep your mouth healthy. Leaving problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future, so it's best to deal with problems early, or, if possible, prevent them altogether.
Why is oral hygiene important?
Gum disease not only affects the possibility of losing your teeth, poor oral hygiene and dental disease can contribute to other health issues such as heart disease and diabetes. Therefore ensuring our patients practice good oral hygiene from an early age and constantly throughout their lives will lessen the chances of serious dental problems in future. Prevention is always better than cure.
How to keep your teeth clean
Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy.
Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats your teeth if you don't brush them properly. It contributes to gum disease and tooth decay. Tooth brushing stops plaque building up.
How to brush your teeth
Make sure you brush all the surfaces of all your teeth, which should take about two minutes. Remember to brush the inside surfaces, outside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste, but don't rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash.

How to floss
Flossing isn't just for dislodging food wedged between your teeth. Regular flossing may also reduce gum disease and bad breath by removing plaque that forms along the gum line. It's best to floss before brushing your teeth.
- Take 12-18 inches (30-45cm) of floss or dental tape and grasp it so you have a couple of inches of floss taut between your hands.
- Slip the floss or dental tape between the teeth and into the area between your teeth and gums as far as it will go.
- Floss with 8-10 strokes, up and down between each tooth, to dislodge food and plaque.
Should I use a mouthwash?
Your dentist can advise you whether you need a mouthrinse depending on your oral health needs. Rinsing helps remove debris from the mouth. It can be done before or after brushing, but it is not a substitute for brushing or flossing. You may consider, or your dentist may recommend, using a mouthrinse with fluoride or antimicrobial agents as part of your daily oral hygiene routine.
If you have difficulty brushing and flossing, a mouthrinse may provide additional protection against cavities and periodontal (gum) disease. Anti-cavity rinses with fluoride help protect tooth enamel.
